A Rant About Narcissists and Obsessive Whiners

I’ve been seeing quite a few posts on Twitter and Facebook asking if Facebook is becoming boring. It’s easy to say yes without much consideration, but the more I think of the question, the more I realize that it’s not Facebook, it’s really the so-called friends who are making the experience boring. Primarily, it’s the narcissists and the obsessive whiners.

The Narcissists

I’m sure you’ve seen the type. The only person they’re interested in is themselves, and the only reason they seem to be using Facebook is to recruit an army of fans so that they can feel even more important than they do already. Their posts are related mostly to bragging, and they typically avoid conversations, choosing instead to post more information about how great they are.

The Obsessive Whiners

These are the people who annoy me the most. The narcissists I can ignore (mostly), but the obsessive whiners cannot seem to find a positive thing to say about anything. At all. They’ll spend plenty of time posting updates about the worst coffee they’ve ever had, why the new computer is not as good as the last one, and why their Lexus needs to be washed again due to all the pollen. Please, people, how about a little perspective? Do you still have a job? Do you still have your family? Did you wake up this morning? Sheesh.

Climbing Down Off The Soap Box

I’m not one who claims to know everything, so I’m not going to tell these people they’re doing it wrong. Social networking is about whatever you make of it, so if you want to be one of these types, have at it. But perhaps one of the best things about social networking is that I get to choose my own filters, so if I don’t want to listen to it, I won’t. See ya!
